Why is the acacia tree the symbol for our organization?

acacia

On our first trip to Kenya as the founding members of IDM, we came upon a majestic group of giraffe nibbling at the sweet high leaves of an acacia tree.

A single tree, with its sharp thorns and spare branches, stood alone on the savannah -- it was so beautiful, so stately, and so very symbolic of Africa.

Our hosts told us that the acacia tree has deep roots, and survives through drought, monsoon, and famine. It is a strong tree and provides both shelter from the searing heat of the sun, and nourishment for many of the animal wanderers of the vast savannah.

The acacia is native to Africa. According to the Bible, acacia wood was used to build the Ark.

Deep roots, sheltering, nourishing, permanent.

What better symbol for our projects?

It keeps us focused.
