Welcome to International Development Missions
International Development Missions, Inc. (IDM) was incorporated as a Nevada non-profit organization in late 2001. In September, 2003, we received certification from the Internal Revenue Service as a qualified 501(c)(3) charitable organization.
We began quietly as a small group of people who had a heart for Africa and were serendipitously brought together. We began to meet and talk about our dreams of going to Africa and helping to improve the conditions of the poor. Then one day, we sat down on a living room floor and drew the plans for a medical clinic. This clinic had been a long-time dream of Muthoka Mutua, a native of Kenya and a new member of our little group; he has lived and worked in Reno for many years. He has long wanted to build a clinic for the people of the Mua Hills, where he grew up. People in the area, including his relatives and friends had to walk many miles to obtain even the most basic medical services.
We made a trip to Kenya in February 2002, met with the Mua Hills Clinic Committee, and broke ground for the clinic. We returned to the United States to begin raising funds for the construction of the clinic. The foundation was completed and dedicated on June 23, 2002. The external walls and roof were completed and dedicated on March 9, 2003. The clinic was completed and dedicated June 05, 2004. The clinic is currently staffed by a nurse, medical technologist, and an assistant. The clinic provides examinations, treatment, and prescriptions at a fair cost to the people of Mua Hills. Commonly treated diseases include malaria and respiratory diseases. The clinic is working toward complete self sufficiency (at this time, IDM continues to support the salaries for the clinic staff).
The next project currently underway is a Learning Center for the people of Mua Hills. The Learning Center will include a library (with a multitude of donated books) as well as eventually offering Internet access.
